The Stand Alone Pledge - celebrating 2 years: 08 November 2018

On 19 October 2016 we officially launched the Stand Alone Pledge for higher education institutions. Some of you may remember the conference we held to mark that day.

Two years on the Pledge has made a significant difference to support for estranged students in individual higher education institutions. 50 universities and colleges across the UK have now taken the Stand Alone Pledge: data from SLC indicates that their support will reach around 30% of all officially recognised estranged students in English and Welsh HEIs. Data for Scottish HE institutions will be available next academic year.

This conference is a celebration of the sector's achievements across the UK over the past 2 years and you will receive a copy of our Impact Report 2016-18.

Prof. Jacqueline Stevenson from the Sheffield Institute of Education will launch the latest research Stand Alone has undertaken in collaboration with the Institute on the role and importance of family relationships for students in UK higher education. You will also hear from two institutional researchers on the experience of estranged students in higher education.

But have we come far enough? Stand Alone doesn't believe we have. There is more the charity, policy makers and institutions need to do especially in our day and age of diverse family structures. Becca Bland, CEO of Stand Alone will outline our ambitious plans for the next three years and you will hear from OfS about the regulatory requirements on HEIs.

Conference programme
