Finance
The Newcastle University Student Financial Support Team will provide bespoke support and resources to estranged students to maximise the funding they can access from the Student Loans Company as well as University hardship and scholarship schemes. In addition to this, the Team are dedicated to equipping estranged students with the skills and resources to develop or enhance their financial wellbeing and capability, both during their time at University and preparing them for life after graduation.
Accommodation
Accommodation Services aims to ensure estranged students have the highest quality experience as they make the transition into Higher Education. The starting point is to provide a home and community that will encourage a sense of belonging. Through engagement with ResLife and ResSupport students will develop social and personal skills, as well as allowing for connectivity with other students in the accommodation. Students will also be encouraged to access a range of university services where needed.
Mental Health & Wellbeing
The counselling and mental health teams recognise that estranged students may not have the support networks that other students do and, therefore, may need more support than others. It also recognises the need for this support to be given in a timely fashion as estranged students may not have other resources to pull on. Estranged students will, therefore, be prioritised and supported to access a range of year round free support. They will also have access to specific colleagues who will proactively reach out to them at key points in the year.
Outreach
At Newcastle University targeted work takes place with identified groups of prospective students, including estranged students, in order to encourage them to consider university generally and Newcastle University in particular. Aspiration-raising events for students focus on providing information on university life, developing skills for university and supporting successful transition.
