Finance
Estranged Student Bursary and link to the YSJ Careers Team for help with finding casual work, and long-term career planning. Our Vice Chancellor's Scholarships include estrangement as a qualifying category. Recipients receive £1000 per year for their course of study. Estranged students will receive £500 on a pre-paid Aspire card to go towards course costs and club memberships. We have a Study Abroad Scholarship to encourage estranged students and care leavers to consider the scheme and expand their horizons.
Accommodation
Flexible options for 365 day accommodation to all estranged students. Estranged students are prioritised when applying to return to university accommodation in years 2 and 3. We will waive deposits for university accommodation and do not require a guarantor. This must be discussed with our Accommodation Team.
Mental Health
There is a dedicated named contact in our Student Life Team. We are setting up a peer support Whatsapp group for estranged students, and link them to wider groups too. We work with academic tutors to help them recognise the difficulties estranged students may face, and understand how best to support them. We work closely with our Wellbeing Team to ensure appropriate referrals are made and support given.
Outreach
We have links with local organisations to encourage young people to engage with the university prior to applying or starting. We can offer them support across their journey. We offer new starters the opportunity to disclose their estranged status on enrolment to ensure they are swiftly connected to the support they need. We are working with our outreach team to develop links with staff at local colleges and sixth forms.
