UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON

Finance
Estranged students are currently a priority group for our financial assistance fund and would be eligible for our UCL undergraduate bursary. A bespoke bursary has been created (as a result of our pledge) which awards estranged students £1,000 per year, with the option to have an advanced payment of £100 to help with transition costs. We also have a Student Funding Welfare team to offer specialist advice and guidance on finance and budgeting..

Accommodation
We have up to 5 places on the Unite Foundation Scholarship programme which offers care leavers and estranged students’ free year-round accommodation for the duration their degree programme. Estranged students are also considered for the accommodation bursary which offers financial support to students residing in UCL owned accommodation.

Mental Health
Our named contact can receive any query and signpost estranged students to the most appropriate service or person, reducing the stress of searching themselves. We plan to improve the visibility and accessibility of our psychological services, and encourage the continual use of our first year ‘transition’ mentoring scheme. This year we are piloting informal coffee mornings for estranged students across the university to meet each other and the support staff available here at UCL.

Outreach
The Widening Participation team prioritises estranged students for all their events and activities, and have a named point of contact for pre-application advice and guidance. We also have a student shadowing scheme, which is specifically for estranged students studying towards a level 3 qualification. A bespoke care experienced and estranged student guide has been developed for prospective students, and we are continuously looking at ways to improve our online and printed information to be more inclusive for estranged students.
